Hey VOMPTI fam!
Even though my time at VOMPTI is nearing 2 years in the past, not a day goes by that I don’t find myself reflecting on the growth that was fostered by the challenges of residency life. There are many growth and thought skills that I continue to refine in my professional and personal life that find their roots here.
The most valuable aspect of the residency, for me, was the weekly mentorship sessions and these times are the ones I miss most. While reading this past weekend I came across a passage in 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth by John C. Maxwell about mentorship. I read it over a few times and felt it was applicable to maximizing your time during residency, or with any mentor.
The advice was as follows:
1. Possess a teachable spirit. In other words, be open-minded.
2. Always be prepared for the time you get with your mentor.
– Set time aside (1-2 hours) before a mentorship session to prepare.
– Set time aside (1-2 hours) after a mentorship session to reflect.
3. Set the agenda by asking great questions.
4. Demonstrate how you’ve learned from your time together.
5. Be accountable for what you’ve learned.This provoked a lot of reflection for me and how I can be a better mentee and life-long student and hoped it could reach more like-minded people here on this forum.

Great post.
So glad to see your still thinking about VOMPTI
As a graduate myself, I felt that mentorship was the best aspect as well.
I want to echo what Taylor said and emphasize that mentor time is great, but the most impactful time is spent before the session and after the session. This is where the growth happens.
Take the time to do this, your personal and professional life will thank you down the road!
